Organizational Overview
Centra Health (Centra) is a regional nonprofit healthcare system based in Lynchburg, Virginia. With more than 7,500 employees, 550 employed providers and physicians and a medical staff of nearly 1,100 providing care in 50 locations, Centra serves over 500,000 people as the dominant provider of critical medical services in central and southern Virginia. Over the last three years, the system’s net revenue grew from $1.2 billion in 2020 to $1.3 billion in 2023.

Centra was created in 1987 through the merger of Lynchburg General (LGH) and Virginia Baptist (VBH) Hospitals. In 2006 Southside Community Hospital (CSCH) in Farmville became a Centra affiliate. In 2014, Centra acquired full ownership of Bedford Memorial Hospital (BMH), in the town of Bedford, which is its fourth hospital. In addition to these flagship facilities, the system includes Centra Specialty Hospital, a long-term acute care hospital, a regional standalone emergency department, health and rehabilitation centers, a cancer center, a nursing school and sites and providers serving a geography of approximately 9,000 square miles. Centra’ services also include residential and outpatient mental health facilities, home health and hospice programs, mammography centers, a sleep disorders center and a center for wound care and hyperbaric medicine. Centra is home to the Central Virginia Center for Simulation and Virtual Learning, the only center in Virginia that offers a full range of simulation experiences. In October 2024, Centra welcomed Richard Tugman to the role of president and Chief Executive Officer.

​​​​​​​ Centra Medical Group (CMG) is a network of local family practices, primary care providers and medical and surgical specialists. With almost 600 employed providers, specialists and surgeons covering the greater Lynchburg area and spanning from Danville to Farmville, Moneta and Bedford, CMG provides the community with primary care providers, cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, gerontologists, neurosurgeons, physiatrists, psychiatrists, therapists and urologists. CMG-Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency is a training ground for future Family Physicians. Many of the physicians at the side hold academic appointments with the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine or Liberty University.

Centra Medical Group is launching the health systems first clinical advancement program for CMG Advanced Practice Providers – LEAPP (Leadership, Excellence, Advocacy, Professional Growth, and Professionalism). This program is a two-tier self-directed pathway that allows our providers to choose how they how they wish to advance along the pathway. The goal of LEAPP is to provide APP’s within the medical group with a structured pathway for advancement, while allowing them to focus on their interest with an associated financial incentive for completing the program. This is an exciting step for our medical group and our Advanced Practice Providers and we look forward to sharing more with you.

About the Practice  

Centra Medical Group is seeking a full-time PA to work at our primary care clinic in Brookneal, VA. 

The position will be working in a rural primary care practice that focuses on providing excellent care to the patients in this supportive community. Our ideal candidate is a physician assistant with experience in primary care.

About Brookneal, Virginia 

Founded on the banks of the historic Staunton River, Brookneal’s origin began when Patrick Henry, the Voice of the American Revolution, selected this strategic location for a ferry crossing linking Campbell, Halifax, and Charlotte Counties. The rolling hills and rural landscape form a bucolic setting that inspired our most vocal Founding Father to retire and call this area his home.

One can still imagine wooden bateaux navigating the historic sluices and falls of the Staunton, as they transport tobacco from Brookneal area plantations to markets beyond. Today, residents and visitors still enjoy the serene setting as they canoe down the Staunton, fish for striped bass, or learn our Country’s history as they take in the interpretive experience of Red Hill, Henry’s plantation home.
