Job Description

Title:   Teachers Aide
Reports to:   Child Development Specialist
Department:   Early Start
Location: 2225 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90019 and  clients homes
FLSA Status:   Non-Exempt
Compensation:  $17.28 /hr
Program Hours:   Monday Friday:  8:30 am to 4:00 pm
Supervisory Responsibility:   None

Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Child Development Specialist (CDS) or Program Manager, prepare for and implement daily programming for children ages birth to five years, who have or are at risk of having developmental delays in a manner that is congruent with ECFs mission.  Maintain a safe, clean school environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safe and regular care of children as scheduled and as needed including toileting, diapering, feeding, changing clothes, food preparation, and constant, direct interactive supervision at all times.  Assist with arrival and departure supervision and loading/unloading buses as needed.
  • Work with children one-on-one and in small groups under the educators direction.  Assist as needed throughout program with language, reinforcement, redirection, etc.  Use positive teaching techniques as directed by the program manager and classroom educator.  Develop and employ a working knowledge of each childs individual plan and goals.  Provide information for client notes and documentation as assigned.
  • Know and follow daily assignments from the program manager and classroom educator.  Perform only child-centered, direct service activities during program hours. Assist with special projects and activities as needed. Duties may include occasional driving.
  • Maintain a classroom environment that is appropriate, clean, attractive, and safe.  Assist educators with updating bulletin boards, materials preparation, etc.
  • Keep the site in a neat, clean, and safe condition.  Assist with daily set-up and clean-up for the daily program schedule.  Assist with site set-up and clean-up routines as assigned.
  • Know emergency procedures including fire, bomb threat, and earthquake drills and follow them during any real or simulated emergency.  Comply with ECFs Injury and Illness Prevention Program including consistent use of universal precautions and protective safety equipment such as protective gloves.  Know the location and proper use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and posted emergency plan for site.
  • Report any suspected child abuse immediately to the appropriate Child Protective Agency and the Program Manager or other administrator and assist with follow-up as needed. Report any client incidents and/or injuries to the program manager or other administrator immediately and assist with related follow-up as needed.  Report any staff or volunteer incidents and/or injuries to the program manager or other administrator immediately and complete related documentation as required. Report parent/guardian concerns to the Program Manager and Child Development Specialist.

Other Duties
  • Comply with ECFs Injury and Illness Prevention Program.  Ensure safe use and operation of tools and/or equipment.
  • Comply with ECF policies and procedures, including mandated reporting requirements.
  • Attend and participate in meetings as scheduled, including staff meetings, supervision meetings, safety meetings, and in-service training.
  • Regular, reliable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

 
Education/Licenses/Certifications: High school diploma or equivalent.  Six (6) college units in Early Childhood Education.

Experience: Six months of parenting, babysitting, volunteering, or work experience with young children (birth to five years old).

Knowledge/Abilities/Skills:
  • Ability to recognize and respond to Universal Safety signs.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish)
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to deal appropriately with sensitive and confidential information.

Requirements

  • Valid California drivers license, reliable transportation, evidence of car insurance, and insurable driving record.
  • Pass a DOJ background investigation.
  • Provide evidence of a negative TB test initially and every three years thereafter.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical.
  • Obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification.

Work Environment

This is a program for infants and toddlers (ages birth to five) who have varying degrees of learning, behavioral, emotional, and developmental disabilities.  Employee may encounter children who are in crisis, exhibiting emotional/psychological distress, or behaving in an aggressive manner.  Work is performed at the center.   Environment may include frequent interruptions, loud noise, odors, varying indoor temperature, and drafts. Outdoor temperature and weather will vary.  Employee may not be in a room alone with a child unless the door or blinds are open.  Children must never be left unattended.

  • Regular use of vision to read printed materials, computer screen, and supervise children.
  • Ability to communicate in person and over the telephone.
  • Occasionally required to travel to various sites within Los Angeles County.
  • Ability to implement First Aid and CPR.
