Department Summary


The Center for Diversity in Leadership in Science (CDLS) is the nation?s first university center to focus on diversity in environmental science. CDLS creates opportunities for underrepresented people to gain education and experience that empower them to become the leaders we need now and in the future, and to address problems in their communities. To serve as a model of diversity and inclusion across the nation and worldwide, the Center for Diverse Leadership in Science has four objectives: (1) invest in student scientific retention, (2) increase belonging by reducing isolation and providing mentorship, (3) give back through programs of outreach, and (4) develop collaborative research & teaching environments.

Position Summary



The UCLA Center for Diverse Leadership in Science (CDLS) is hiring a specialist in education and outreach with extensive experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programming in the Earth and Environmental Sciences. The Grant and Program Development Specialist will use their expertise in analytical practices, policies, and procedures to research, analyze, implement, and evaluate higher education initiatives, including mentorship programming and student and alumni engagement. The candidate will apply educational theory to develop new programming for the center, while also collaborating on related grant proposal writing and program evaluation. They will demonstrate strong judgment in selecting methods and techniques for problem-solving and strategic development. The role includes working closely with faculty, staff, students, and community partners, leading the development of new DEI programs and activities. The ideal candidate will have leadership experience in DEI within Green STEM, particularly with outreach to low-resource communities and historically marginalized minority groups.

Qualifications



  • 5+ years Proven experience in DEI programming, specifically within STEM or Earth System Science (Required) And
  • 5+ years Experience with mentoring programs (Required) And
  • 1+ years Experience with grant proposal writing. (Required) And
  • 5+ years Leadership experience in DEI outreach, particularly with low-resource and historically marginalized minority communities. (Required) And
  • 5+ years Proven ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, administrators, students, and external partners. (Required)
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Expertise: Extensive experience designing, implementing, and evaluating DEI programs, specifically within STEM, Earth, and Environmental Sciences. (Required)
  • Educational Theory and Practice: Knowledge of higher education principles and the ability to apply educational theory to develop and implement mentorship programming and outreach initiatives. (Required)
  • Grant and Proposal Writing: Proficiency in writing grant proposals, including securing funding for DEI and outreach programs in higher education. (Required)
  • Stakeholder Coordination and Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with internal departments, faculty, external partners, and stakeholders to coordinate DEI initiatives and programming. (Required)
  • Mentorship Program Analysis and Development: Skilled in developing and implementing mentoring programs, with experience in bidirectional, near-peer, and faculty/student mentoring relationships. (Required)
  • Evaluation and Assessment Skills: Familiarity with designing and conducting evaluations of community engagement and informal science education programs, including reporting results and making data-driven recommendations. (Required)
  • Organizational Development: Knowledge of best practices for implementing organizational change and developing new policies or procedures that support DEI and educational goals. (Required)


Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations



  • Master's Degree In a related field and/or equivalent experience/training. (Preferred)
  • Bachelor's Degree In a related field and/or equivalent experience/training. (Required)
