Title: Literacy Specialist

Department: Programs

Reports To: Literacy Program Director

Status: Non-Exempt/ Full-Time 30-35 hours per week

Compensation: $21-$23

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of our Literacy Director or Program Directors, this position will support our club programs for elementary or middle school members.

The Literacy Specialist is responsible for guiding groups of children in multi-sensory literacy instruction using the Orton-Gillingham approach, while promoting awareness of reading challenges at a designated Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley Club site. He/she/they will develop and teach multi-sensory literacy lessons related to the core service areas of BGCSV. The Literacy Specialist will commit to improving club members’ reading, writing, and spelling abilities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with Program Director, Associate Director, or Program Coordinator in developing and implementing daily program(s) activities compatible with Boys & Girls Clubs core values and department themes.
  • Create curriculum and implement literacy programs for elementary and middle school members on a quarterly basis.
  • Provide extra supervision during school site lunches and recesses.
  • Attend weekly team meetings focused on multi-sensory literacy training and program curriculum.
  • Teach multi-sensory literacy lessons to all students at a BGCSV sites.
  • Responsible for always ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all members.
  • Supervise members to ensure that programs adhere to Club philosophy and run effectively.
  • Responsible for maintaining the facility, equipment, and supplies.
  • Complete safety incident/accident reports for any incident/accident or reoccurring behavior problems.
  • Successfully complete Orton-Gillingham literacy training and participate in all required ongoing professional development.
  • Lead and support other Boys & Girls Clubs programs when literacy programming is not in session.
  • Adhere to organizational policies and procedures as described in Employee Handbook and elsewhere.
  • Adhere to Boys & Girls Club philosophy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, aligned with your training, skills, and expertise.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Graduate
  • Available Monday-Friday 9 am - 6 pm.
  • Flexible and patient
  • Ability to develop programming and activities for elementary and middle school children.
  • Basic understanding of various stages of child development.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and spelling skills.
  • Ability to pass the Sonoma Valley Unified School District’s instructional aide test with a 70% or better.
  • Ability to pass a DOJ fingerprint clearance (if 18 or older) and provide a negative TB test.
  • Complete and pass mandated reporter training.
  • Ability to lift or carry 40lbs.
  • Reliable transportation

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 to 4 years experience working with elementary to middle-school-aged children in a group setting.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of the Orton-Gillingham system of literacy.
  • Ability to be certified in CPR and First Aid
  • Bilingual a plus
