Overview

The Lead Installer is a hands-on field leadership role responsible for personally performing HVAC installations while leading the crew and ensuring each project is completed on time, to the highest quality standards, and in full compliance with manufacturer specifications and code requirements. This role carries direct accountability for job execution in the field—install quality, productivity, safety, and customer satisfaction. The Lead Installer works alongside installers and apprentices daily, setting the pace, solving problems in real time, and ensuring jobs are completed right the first time.

Key Responsibilities

** Installation & Job Execution

**

  • Perform HVAC installations personally, with a focus on ductless mini-split and air-source heat pump systems.
  • Execute all critical installation tasks including equipment setting, line set routing, flaring, vacuuming, pressure testing, electrical connections, and system startup.
  • Ensure installations are completed efficiently without sacrificing workmanship or safety.

** Field Leadership & Schedule Accountability

**

  • Serve as the on-site working lead, directing daily work activities while actively participating in installation labor.
  • Own job timelines and installation quality, ensuring projects are completed on schedule and within scope.
  • Adjust crew assignments, sequencing, and work methods in real time to keep jobs on track.

** Quality Control & Technical Oversight

**

  • Take full responsibility for final install quality, system performance, and commissioning.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve installation, design, or site-related issues in the field without delay.
  • Verify system operation, charging, calibration, and controls per manufacturer requirements prior to closeout.

** Crew Development & Safety Leadership

**

  • Lead by example through proper installation techniques, safety practices, and professional conduct.
  • Train and mentor installers and apprentices on tools, methods, and quality expectations while working side-by-side.
  • Enforce safety standards, PPE usage, and jobsite cleanliness at all times.

** Documentation & Compliance

**

  • Complete all required job documentation including photos, equipment details, field changes, and closeout checklists.
  • Ensure all work complies with all applicable state and local codes.

** Customer Interaction

**

  • Act as the primary on-site contact for homeowners, builders, or general contractors.
  • Clearly communicate work progress, timelines, and expectations while maintaining a professional presence.
  • Ensure a positive customer experience through clean work practices and high-quality results.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5+ years of hands-on HVAC installation experience, including ductless mini-split, heat pump, or VRF systems.
  • Proven experience serving as a working lead or senior installer responsible for job completion and quality.
  • Strong working knowledge of HVAC mechanical, refrigerant, and electrical systems.
  • High proficiency with digital gauges, vacuum pumps, recovery equipment, and diagnostic tools.
  • EPA 608 Universal Certification required.
  • North Carolina HVAC license (H3-I or equivalent) preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record; ability to travel daily to job sites.

Education & Certifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of accredited HVAC technical school or apprenticeship preferred.
  • OSHA 10 or 30-Hour Safety Certification a plus.
