Overview

The VareCo Construction Engineer Trainee Program is a three-year rotational program designed to develop future leaders in real estate construction and development. Trainees gain hands-on experience in all phases of construction Engineer — from preconstruction estimating and budgeting to on-site execution and financial reporting.

This program is built for detail-oriented, driven individuals who want to connect technical expertise with leadership, ensuring every project delivers exceptional quality, on time and on budget.

We’re seeking motivated trainees with a foundation in engineering or construction management who are eager to learn, problem-solve, and grow into leadership roles within our construction operations.

Successful candidates are:

Program Structure

Rotational Development

The program provides broad exposure to all aspects of VareCo’s construction and development operations.

Rotations include:

  • Preconstruction & Estimating – blueprint reading, quantity takeoffs, subcontractor bid analysis, and cost estimating.
  • Project Engineering & Coordination – RFIs, submittals, scheduling, procurement, and quality control.
  • Field Management – jobsite oversight, safety compliance, subcontractor management, and progress reporting.
  • Project Controls & Financial Tracking – forecasting, budget tracking, cost reporting, and software implementation.

Project-Based Learning

Trainees participate in live projects and contribute to:

  • Preparing takeoffs and estimates for upcoming construction projects.
  • Assisting in the preparation of bid packages and evaluating subcontractor proposals.
  • Managing RFIs, submittals, and construction documentation.
  • Tracking job costs, forecasting budgets, and reporting on progress.
  • Supporting field operations with scheduling, materials procurement, and coordination.
  • Working with the construction leadership team to identify process improvements.

Mentorship & Development

Trainees are mentored by project managers and superintendents, gaining exposure to leadership decision-making and hands-on field management. Each rotation builds technical and management competencies, preparing participants for advancement into a Project Engineer or Assistant Project Manager role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Engineering or Construction Management (engineering preferred).
  • Experience in a construction internship or entry-level field/office role required.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and drawings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and construction management tools (Procore, InEight, or equivalent).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential, organization, and problem-solving ability.
