The Air Force Psychiatrist acts as a vital cog in the mental wellness machinery of the United States Air Force, providing essential psychiatric services in an informal setting to ensure the mental health and operational readiness of service members. The initiative is designed to foster a comfortable and approachable environment where military personnel can engage in candid conversations about their mental health without the formality and pressure of traditional clinic settings. Psychiatrists at the Air Force collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to facilitate a robust and supportive mental health framework for our airmen.
Informal Consultations: Engage with service members in an informal, café-like setting to discuss mental health concerns and provide initial assessments.
Maintain Confidentiality: Ensure all conversations and consultations uphold the strictest levels of confidentiality and trust.
Initial Assessments: Provide psychological evaluations and preliminary diagnoses in a friendly and non-threatening environment.
Referrals: Identify requirements for further evaluation, treatment, or support, and direct individuals to appropriate resources or specialists.
Mental Health Advocacy: Raise awareness and destigmatize mental health discussions among service members, encouraging a culture of openness and support.
Resource Knowledge: Stay informed about all available mental health resources and initiatives within the Air Force to accurately guide individuals in need.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive mental health support.
Documentation: Maintain meticulous records of interactions while adhering to privacy and data protection regulations.
Education: A Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution. Completion of a psychiatric residency program.
License: A valid and active medical license to practice psychiatry.
Military Requirements: Meet all criteria for military service, including physical standards, and completion of Officer Training School (OTS).
Experience: Previous experience in a psychiatric role, with preference given to candidates with military or veterans’ mental health experience.
Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Skills: Excellent communication, empathy, assessment, and management skills. Adaptability to work in diverse settings and with diverse populations.
Setting: Involve working in clinical or other settings as required.
Travel: Possible domestic and international travel, depending on assignment and duty station.
